History The GST philosophy has always been one of camaraderie above all else. Granted, we all love to race and win, but not at the expense of having personalities that conflict or more importantly that can't sit down together, enjoy a frosty beverage and have a laugh. Every year we try to add one or two individuals who is a strong rider that we feel will fit in well in terms of personality. Our minimum requirements for new members; 35-100 years old, must be strong enough to get around the "Shootout" in the front group (not the break), must have a solid knowledge of big hair rock and be able to ride with a hang-over (not necessarily win a race, but perform solidly). In 2003, the team's first season, GST came out of the gate strong and won the very first race of the year, Usery Pass. This will always be one of the team's highlights. Perfect team tactics allowed our sprinter Chris Thompson to get into a four-man break. Unfortunately for the three individuals with Chris, they failed to drop him in the hills, and no one was going to beat him in a run to the line. I'll never forget Paul Wolf, a national caliber racer, stating after the race "who is the guy with the guns?" Since then the team has had several wins and podium positions but that will always be a special race. Afterwards we all sat in the parking lot, ate eggs and tortillas, drank and re-lived the race moment by moment. That pretty much set the tone for GST. In 2004, the additions of Tyler Ford and John Simonson were a perfect fit. That year GST went on to win one of the largest races on the Arizona calendar, Tucson Bicycle Classic. In the final stage the race was still up for grabs. The entire GST train rode at the front of the race all day and controlled every move in the race, having the say so in who did what. Afterwards we all sat in the parking lot, ate eggs and tortillas (maybe it was bagels and cream cheese), and again re-lived every moment of the prior three days. 2005 started with great promise. We added consummate funny man, who has never seen a bad mood, Marty Mares. GST won the first few races on the 2005 calendar from time trials and road races to stages in larger stage races. These were in late January, early February and the Tucson Bicycle Classic was moved from March to the end of September leaving a gaping hole in the spring Arizona calendar. However, one highlight from the spring was Tyler Ford and his brother Garret winning the Tour of Phoenix on the tandem. Although GST had a good turn out at La Vuelta de Bisbee in 2005, it really wasn't until the summer and the end of the season that the results came in. Most notable were John Simonson and Scott Baker. John brought home the Master's National Championship jersey in both the tandem time trial and road race. Scott Baker also excelled in the National Championships and subsequently scorched the late season Arizona race calendar winning time trials, hill climbs and nearly winning the Tucson Bicycle Classic spending a day in the leader's jersey. For 2006 we added both Jon Black and Jay Guyot. As the year got rolling the team was hit with the injury bug as several of our members ended up having to take time off the bike. By mid summer it seemed that only Baker, Simonson, and Guyot were still racing. No matter, as GST was still represented well on the podium with Guyot taking the summer criterium series, Baker capping his outstanding year by taking State Championships in the road race, the TT, and the hill climb. And finally, Simonson and Baker taking another National title in the TT on a tandem. In 2007 the team grew to include Kurt Kroese, Jesus Lamb, and Leo Masursky. Even as a GST rookie, Jesus Lamb made his presence known by winning the team's inaugural "Iron Man" award given to the rider who competes in the highest number of races during the season. Other highlights included Scott Biaggi becoming the first team member to win a stage in the La Vuelta de Bisbee, and Scott Baker bringing home the state championship jersey the individual time trial. 2008 looks to be our best year yet with the addition of Peter Brown and Ed Gilligan to the team. Our season goal is to excel in the major races on the Arizona Calendar and to win the Arizona Copper Cup Point Series. We also anticipate seeing a couple more National Championship jerseys return to Tucson to join John Simonson's and Scott Baker's. |
